Siskin Gig at The Old Still 6th February 2004 Written by Kevin Neal

Its hard to define exactly what makes a great band, obviously you need talent, but just as important are confidence, style, passion and belief. Siskin is a band overflowing with these qualities, and more, they have that indescribable X factor that just makes them a pleasure to watch. Quite often you watch a band and you're left with the feeling that you could do better, then one Friday you stumble upon a band like siskin in the Old Still, Peterborough and you're left in awe of their beautifully crafted songs, talented performing and pretty much perfect vocals. Lead singer Katie is not only blessed with a stunning voice that fills the room with the richest most powerful and crisp sound you're ever likely to hear, she also has a unique talent for making you feel like she's singing just for you, she manages to connect on personal level with just about everyone in the room. Drummer Paul spends most of the set with a huge grin on his face, he'll tell you later that its because he's laughing at the mistakes he's made, personally I think thats bullshit, he's smiling simply cos he's loving what he's doing, if this band makes mistakes they hide it very well, its the trust they have in each others abilities that makes them able to put so much emotion in their performance. Musically they describe themselves as indie pop, but in their case the genre is unimportant, go and see siskin if you appreciate good music, give them an audience and they will give you a night of high quality entertainment.

Bright future - a little bird told me!
CAT BELL meets Siskin - and is very impressed. I AM extremely excited about this week's band, ladies and gentlemen. Not only do I love their CD but I have seen them perform a live acoustic set and it was fantastic. Siskin have been together for just six months but have already produced an EP and are breaking into the university circuit. I really hope this band make it further than playing local pubs and clubs. Their self-titled EP demonstrates the varying musical styles that the band are more than capable of playing. The opening number is a real stunner, full of energy and powerful vocals from Kate. The closing track, See You, while being much slower and softer is still a powerful piece of music. The band's website is good too.

INDIE popsters siskin are making a welcome return to the live circuit after taking a break over the festive season. The female-fronted band have been together just a matter of months, but already have proven a hit with audiences across the city. The band's next gig is scheduled for Friday, February 6, at the Old Still, in the Westgate Arcade, Peterborough.

EP review-Cambridge Band Agency (21/11/03)

Siskin are a relatively new five-piece band from Cambridgeshire and this is the first studio release from them featuring four original tracks. The Opener, "Live Today" carries power, speed and sheer energy and is reminiscent of the James Bond Theme style by John Barry, with its guitar courtesy of Gareth, lyrics and the mighty vocals of Kate Ward. "Rewind", the second track from the cd, takes on a lighter more delicate sound, laced in acoustic guitar and emotive heartfelt lyrics and sounds like something that Heather Nova might have had her hand in. By the time that you're halfway through "Eternal Optimist" you will have already realised just how great Siskin are, lyrically and musically. The recording is incredibly slick and the choice of songs a perfect variation to show of their musical diversity and Kate's vocal power too.  "See You" is the cd closer and quite rightly so, with its almost John Lennon "Imagine" piano intro and outro it makes perfect sense as the ending to this cd. This is an outstanding cd and hopefully the first of many from this talented new band.  8/10
